This monograph seeks to analyze State-Church relations in Colombia during the 1870s in light of selected passages from the priestly life of Vicente Arbeláez, the archbishop of Bogotá between 1868 and 1884. From these passages, the monograph attempts to explore the complexity of the relationship between the two powers during the radical period in the country. This period was marked by confrontations and rapprochements in the context of the reforms undertaken by the civil authority, which affected and reformulated the role of the Catholic Church in society. Specifically, the monograph focuses on the educational reform of 1870, which transferred the organization, direction, and inspection of primary education in the country from the Church to the Federal Government. Previously, this responsibility had rested with the Church. A public debate arose around education, centering on the moral formation of citizens and the future of the country. Arbeláez played a key role in this debate as the head of the Church in the Republic during his tenure as the Archbishop of Bogotá. From this position, he sought to negotiate more favorable conditions for his institution with the State. However, the disputes that emerged divided a population torn between those who considered Catholicism as the cornerstone of the country, and those who - without renouncing their faith - aimed to construct a national identity not necessarily tied to religion. These groups found expression and organization in spaces such as the press and Catholic associations, venues where a variety of actors expressed their opinions regarding the changing context. This context marked a rupture in ecclesiastical discipline and raised questions about the Catholic character of the Republic. The thesis suggests the need to explore the different identities that existed around faith and political ideologies in a period when the separation between State and Church decreed by the Constitution of Rionegro was not absolute. The case of Vicente Arbeláez is illustrative of how various individuals attempted to reconcile ecclesiastical power with civil power, despite the existing disagreements between these two authorities. Both were vying to define and defend their positions in society, resulting in the Church's gradual relegation to a more private sphere, moving away from the public education system.

From 1800 to 1808, merchants and royal officers in Cartagena de Indias requested the execution of an economic policy that allowed them to overcome the port blockades caused by the several wars Spain waged those years: comercio neutral. By taking the history of the discussions around this measure as a gateway to understand the economic thought of the time in the Nuevo Reino de Granada, this article seeks to explore the theoretical foundations upon which comercio neutral was grounded. Three moments are studied: 1800, 1805 and 1809. In each moment, those who proposed and those who attacked the measure argued for and against hinging upon two main premises: first, the observation of the application of economic policies was a valid method to analyze their pertinence and, second, an active commerce was the sine qua non for achieving felicidad pública. These two premises and their pragmatic end display the ideological syncretism that informed the theoretical foundations of Bourbon Reformism, from which comercio neutral stemmed. This article answers the question about the nature of New-Grenadine economic thought by situating it within its practical intentions and by suggesting that within this pragmatical boundaries new voices, new documents and a new historiographical proposal on the political economy of the Nuevo Reino de Granada are found.

During the 17th and 18th centuries there were several cases presented to the Court of Justice of the Nuevo Reino de Granada, which alleged that several people were exercising the healing arts without the appropriate medical titles. By then, it was believed that those who used herbs and spells as therapeutic methods, usually women, should be judged as yerbatera-poisoners, because rather to cure the patients, they killed those who consume their preparations. The document states that the criminal processes of poisoning are a prism in which different problems of the neogranadina colonial period converge; such as health, medical trades, illness, magical-religious beliefs, woman’s ideal, delinquency and the dynamics of Spanish institutions, among others. In this way, is study how was the relationship between the legal, criminal law (issued by the Crown) and behavior "diverted" (relating to the crime of poisoning) of the habitants of the Nuevo Reino de Granada, between the 17th and 18thcenturies. For this, are going to be indexed from different perspectives, some issues of the colonial world neogranadino related to the rumors, the gossip, and the importance of spoken communication in the viceroyalty; the problem of honor, as one of the most outstanding virtues of the time and beliefs of popular culture in relation to poisoning and different healing methods.

The called “Casa Liberal massacre” in Cali and the “assault to Ceilán” are two acts of violence that occurred in Valle del Cauca in October 1949 and which are part of a long list of massacres, fires and assaults that took place in this department during this period. These two events have been taken up and analyzed by different academic studies from distinct historical perspectives. For this reason, the present thesis analyzes proposes a historiographic balance on the academic production of the events of the Casa Liberal in Cali and Ceilán, Valle del Cauca, elaborated between 1962 and 2019. It seeks to make a critical reflection on the approaches, points of view, analytical frameworks and the aspects that are privileged in the investigated studies. It is also intended to review the primary and secondary sources used in the reconstruction of the events and observe the causal explanations that each of the authors give to the “Casa Liberal massacre” and the “assault on Ceilán”.

This article analyzes how Colombian entrepreneurs used documentary photography to forge a distinctive guild identity between 1945 and 1960. As part of a wider set of internal strategies designed to unify the recently legitimated goals of the industrial elite, photography contributed to establish visual references associated with the promise of modernity. The entrepreneurs embodied and assimilated such references in order to strengthen their self-perception as a group and to distinguish themselves from other guilds. The primary sources this article is built on are texts and images derived from entrepreneurial magazines, whose styles and modalities of self-representation will be analyzed in detail.

During the 1920s, the Tropical Oil Company established an oil enclave in Barrancabermeja through a concession granted by the Colombian State. The Tropical's presence completely transformed the concession area, building infrastructure related to oil exploration, exploitation and processing. Thousands of people from various parts of the country and abroad came to Barrancabermeja to work in the Tropical facilities, generating tensions and social transformations that became visible in two of the most important events: the strikes of 1924 and 1927. This work analyzes the investments of the oil company and the rhetoric it used to promote its operations in the enclave, as well as the reactions that these generated in the workers and the role of the State in the disputes between Tropical and its workers.

This paperwork aimed to retake the idea of cultural products consumption, specifically asking for Hollywood film demand, in Bogotá during the period between 1925 and 1946. According to this, the research questions how was the Hollywood film demand among Bogotans during the early decades of the twentieth century and, at the same time, it focuses on all commercial films produced in the United States.
To show how that Hollywood film consumption was not passive, this paperwork focused on how two groups of people saw and understood this kind of productions, taking into account a typology established by Ricardo Arias, in which part of the population of Bogotá was divided into radical Catholic individuals and radical liberals of secular trend.
What is proposed is to show that despite the differences between these two groups, the vision built from these films was not that different, as both groups disqualified the movies for being a degrading technology which was subordinated to the interests of an industry.

This research delves into the study of two summary proceedings in Puente Real (today Puente Nacional, Santander) for the year 1800 against Alejo Franqui and Carlos Pinzón, due to the apparent illicit amorous relationships they had, each one, with other men. Likewise, the work approaches the reflection of sodomy from a theoretical perspective, through the study of the theological and juridical discourses that shaped the rejection of the practice of the 'nefarious sin'.

During the 1930s industrial capitalism it organized different areas of politics and culture in Colombia. Through the case study of Coltabaco, we explore three moments of the links of industrial capitalism with Colombian society. At first, we describe the political ties that made visible different kinds of political participation of the industrial sector and its relationship with the regions, the institutions (public and private) and elites, also we underling the importance of the domestic market for the Tobacco Industry. In the second stage, we characterized the links between Coltabaco and the rural sector from the pedagogical work of Coltabaco for leaf production, likewise, we describe the representations of grower of tobacco linked to the industry were widespread in the rural sector; finally, the links between Coltabaco and urban areas are analyzed in the tension cigarette-woman. In cigarette consumption situation, female pleasure dissociated himself from moral and hygienic conditions, winning, through taste, a new circumstance to experience the subjectivity of the modern woman. “Los Problemas del tabaco” were not limited exclusively to the area of economic policy, peasant customs were also unrelated to the rhythm required for the industry, and moral and hygienic ideas that organized the custom in women-cigarette relationship.

The work aims to show that, throughout the first half of the twenty century, there was a singular attempt to write a new story of the country, which it was away of the traditional models put by the Colombian Academy of History, and more closer to the narration of a colonial and national past ingrained to the mores and daily practices of the popular areas. Through the Enrique Otero D´Costa´s work I note that the "academic history" cannot be conceived such as homogeneus, as well as suggested by the same colombian historiography over time.

The aim of this investigation is to analyze the construction of the southern boundary of Bogotá’s historical center, which was declared cultural patrimony in the early 80s, focusing on two processes: on the one hand, the demolition of large parts of the traditional Santa Bárbara neighborhood; on the other hand, the recognition of La Candelaria’s patrimonial value. Although both areas of the city were historically part of the city center and thus shared a common origin, in the end only La Candelaria was considered worthy of conservation. Therefore, this graduate thesis seeks to explain why Santa Barbara was excluded from the city’s historical narrative, by concentrating on the discussions about its historical value. Such debates related to the public use of history can also be conceived as “struggles for memory”, in the words of Elizabeth Jelin.

This investigation about the experiences and representations produced by the workers of the Administrative Department of Security DAS, during their trajectory in the institution and in two traumatic events: the bomb of 1989 and the suppression of 2011. From the use of oral sources and reconstructions of the press, its wonders how these two moments configured and defined the way in which DAS workers conceived their life in an institution fulled by scandals that would lead to its dissolution.

For long part of the twentieth century the Arhuaco indigenous of the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta suffered a territorial, political, economic and cultural dispossession process by Capuchin missionaries and settlers. As a strategy against colonization, the Arhuacos developed an interlocution with Colombian State, through which they denounced the abuses and demanded the intervention of national and regional authorities. The analysis of transformations and continuities of the arhuaco claims pretend to expand what is understood as fighting strategy and show that this indigenous group and their claims were crossed by particular historical conditions.

This thesis analyzes the use of the Vuelta a Colombia by the Gustavo Rojas Pinilla regimen between 1954 and 1957 to give legitimacy to this government. For this, the public display of power of the regime in the Vuelta a Colombia were analyzed like the Rojas’s image, the arbitrary modification of the race or the award ceremonies. At the same time the situation of sports in Colombia during the 1950s was studied, considering necessity of associations between official institutions (such as mayor’s offices or governorates) with private enterprises to support the ricing sports competitions. All immersed by the regionalism that cycling awakened in spectators, cyclists and even sponsors, fueled by nascent sporting rivalries. Despite this, with the emergence of regionalism, sports were one of the vehicles for the dissemination of Rojas' nationalism.

To sustain the vast educational and religious project of the Society of Jesus in America, it was necessary to implement a meticulous economic network that involved hundreds of actors, different forms of work, and a wide trade-market, based on the system administration of the hacienda-Colegio. The main objective of this research is to analyze the components and constituent elements of the economic network of the Society of Jesus in the Province and Colegio Máximo de Santa Fe at the time of its expulsion (1767). To do this, it is proposed to use as a methodology different primary sources, mainly archive, housed in different national and foreign archives, in order to specify the details (nodes) that make up the network and see the forms of economic operability that supported the Society of Jesus in eighteenth-century New Granada. As a theoretical framework, the use of concepts such as network, node, company, commerce, and relationship are proposed, all of them framed within a precapitalist temporality. Throughout the investigation, it was found that the Jesuits in Santa Fe were larger than what historiography has shown before, presenting itself as a credit institution in the city and enjoying strategies and mechanisms that guaranteed lower metal disbursements, as well as employing the specialization and sub specialization of their assets thus achieving an excellent sample of a precapitalist economic rationality.

Between 1960 and 1970, the introduction of new foreign comics in Colombia represented a relevant phenomenon for the rethinking of this products by having an impact on the formation of national cartoonists during the 1980s. Several authors appropriated trends, creating hybrid works with different visual and narrative elements. In addition, the strengthening of the publishing industry, based on the development of Graphic Arts, allowed the creative production of such publications to be reinvented. In this sense, the present thesis seeks to highlight the growth of the Colombian comic in 1980, considering processes of appropriation and cultural hybridization identified in the press comics. For this, a case study was proposed based on the analysis of the Sunday supplement of Los Monos de El Espectador (1981). Thus, it is affirmed that the Colombian comic since 1980 is the result of stylistic fusions facilitated by socio-economic and cultural actors immersed in an editorial device.

This thesis aims to explore and analyze how the history of mathematics has been written in Colombia, focusing especially on all the historiographic production created between 1973 to 2017. This work shows how this history has been written almost exclusively by mathematicians, who felt the need to begin to create an authentic history of mathematics in the country and establish a community dedicated to making, thinking and structuring a national history of mathematics. The topic was chosen not only out of personal interest but also because I consider it relevant to understand how history has been built and created in scientific fields in Colombia, something that still needs to be worked on. The almost total absence of historiographical works has also motivated to carry out this investigative work. Thus, the justification for this work lies in the fact that it wants to fill a void in historiography. Mathematics has been made invisible in its historical development, except, of course, by the mathematician community. On the other hand, we also want to give the reader the opportunity to understand and understand how the writing processes of that story have been, as well as the different elements that will be mentioned in the main objective.

In the first decades of the twentieth century in Bogotá was developed a process of professionalization of the artists which allowed them to improve their status in society and consolidate the roles that identify themselves as representatives of their occupation. This change is evidenced by noting that until the late nineteenth century there was no clear distinction between the categories of artist and craftsman, while for the 1930s began to appear aesthetic proposals that broke with the traditional canons of academic art. Thus, after the application of a theoretical framework based on the sociology and history of the professions and based on the sociologist and social history of art, we analyzed the different stages crossed by the members of this occupation in order to be recognized as "professionals". It was possible to show that these types of social processes are very complex, because for understand the dynamics that occur in professional groups is necessary taken into account the different identities of the members: gender, class or region, which generate relations of friendship, enmity and rivalry, which are not always made visible in the investigations that have addressed this period.

Paper money carries images of what is supposed to identify the nation, generally related to the past and heritage. In Colombia, these images have traditionally been selected by authorities such as Congress or the Central Bank (Banco de la República). This investigation gives an overview of the iconographic tradition in Colombian paper money and focuses on the most recent “family”, launched in 2016. How it is composed, why was it issued and who made the decisions are some of the questions that this investigation addresses. Moreover, appealing to the concepts of public use of history and public history, it approaches to the reception of these images, with no aspiration of giving a representative result in terms of statistics, but to acknowledge that people have something to say about the symbols and personages that others have chosen to identify the nation as a whole.

This article reviews the lawsuit of Diego de Torres, a cacique mestizo of Turmequé, in the New Kingdom of Granada, since the ratification as cacique (1571) until he presented to the king Philip II (1578). I propose that he acquired the knowledge about colonial juridical practices through people he met. As a consequence the cacique was able to barge his way through the different judicial instances and to obtain an audience with the monarch. I conclude that Diego de Torres was part of a local network composed by crown officials and rich spaniards, and at the same time he became an important node of a transatlantic network.

In this text it are analyzed the nationalistic representations created by the bogotan society during the celebration of the first centenary of birth of Simón Bolívar in 1883. The celebration is conceived as a performance, an event in which the production and reception are entangled in one moment. In this sense, in the center of the discussion it is important to highlight the nationalist conceptions of the politicians of La Regeneración, a political movement that promoted the modernization of the country through the tradition, observing how these ideas were presented and discussed during a celebration. In the Centenary are promoted a national unification and the identification of Colombia with the image of Simón Bolívar as the leader in the search for the ‘progress’ and ‘civilization’. In consequence, this text contributes to the cultural historical studies of the centenary celebrations in Colombia and their influence in the construction of the nation during the XIX century.

This paper contributes to the Colombian historiography about commemorations by exploring the diversity of ways in which Colombia celebrates the Centennial of the Battle of Boyacá (1919). This study approaches the different ways in which the celebration took place in Bogota and some cities of Colombia through three dimensions: the consolidation of national unity, artistic and industrial exhibitions and the construction of monuments. The applied methodology was based on critical analysis of different primary sources. Especially local books of the Centennial Celebration Boards, speeches, decrees, and laws issued during the commemorative events. From these, it is evident that national and regional commemorative discourses were constructed appealing to concepts such as homeland and nation to create a feeling of debt towards the Independence heroes.

This research explores the trajectories of Antonia, María Helena, Cermira and Patricia, four former secretaries graduated from Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje (SENA) who worked in Bogotá companies between late sixties and the year 2000. Based on the question about employment and training paths, this monography explores each experience surrounding their arrival, formation and working practices; in a moment where the demand of workers in technical occupations, allowed the growth of female labor force at industrial and service economic sectors in Colombia. Thus, this paper offers an approach about secretarial training paths and about the dimensions, tensions, paradoxes, and experiences associated with the practice of secretarial work, considering each trajectory assumed by the former secretaries into important companies such as Acerías Paz del Río, Catastro Distrital, the Administrative Department of Security and the Military Industry. The experiences surrounding secretarial work shed lights to understand it as a profession that dialogued and confronted traditional roles such as service, docility and appearance associated with female labor. From training, the secretary’s work demanded to embrace the label of being “pretty, efficient and quiet” to achieve success at work. Nevertheless, in practice, each secretary negotiated such attitudes at the time of taking over the administration of the office. Thus, this thesis seeks to demonstrate that the administration of appearance and the administration of the office exercised by each secretary were tools that helped them to reach their labor promotion and becoming indispensables for the operation of the business world.

In its more than 50 years of existence as an armed movement, the FARC guerrilla learned, taught and produced knowledge. These were institutionalized in training schools and courses of specialties, conceptualized in pedagogical materials that took the form of manuals, and applied in military plans and balances. An insight of the history of the guerrilla with a sensitivity to the production, teaching and learning of knowledge, can illuminate aspects that have been little known about this organization, or even complement narratives that have neglected this perspective. The text focuses on a particular moment in the history of the FARC, in which a "New Form of Operating" was established, an operational tactic that demanded transformations in the movement's relationship with knowledge, especially in relation to the "knowledge of the terrain". I argue that in addition to contributing to the domination of the terrain to obtain tactical advantages that would contribute to the fulfillment of its strategic objectives, the production of these types of knowledge co-produced very particular ways of inhabiting and imagining space. Hence, the research is committed to giving another texture to the stories that have been written about the FARC, still very focused on political, ideological and military aspects, although it is also emerging as a contribution in other fields such as the Social Studies of Science and Technology.

The present research aims to analyze how has japanese migration been written in Colombia from two periods, the first, from 1964 to 1990, and the second, from 1990 to 2018. For this purpose, seven texts were chosen, to account the historiographical transition. The particular historical context in which the various works were produced and the specific forms of social science writing were also taken into account. Thus, the historiography of the Japanese exodus analyzes the multiple social, political, economic and cultural elements that permeated its writing. This production is nourished by the readings, narratives and theoretical approaches present in the texts addressed. The temporalities are traversed by the transformation of the historiographical paradigm of the sixties, which marked the reinterpretation of the present and a changing thematic and epistemological (self-critical) reading and reflection on the social disciplines. Likewise, post-structuralist approaches in conjugation with the professionalization of the social sciences implied the incorporation and resignification of new analytical and thematic categories that sought to vindicate the role of narratively and historically relegated subjects; thus questioning the predilection of the political and economic approaches, and displacing them as the only theoretical models. This double approach allowed us to understand the transition between non-academic and academic writing, as well as the historical and anthropological construction of Japanese migration in Colombia. The primary sources used were books, articles, newsletters, community testimonies and graduate theses on the migration phenomenon. These were analyzed under a series of historiographic categories such as silences, actors, context of production, theories, among others. Finally, migration has been such a complex phenomenon that authors have approached it from different perspectives to explain its totality and integrity.

This is the story of Imre Mikli and his arrival in a new world. The thesis seeks to characterize the post-war and Cold War geopolitical, economic, cultural, and social tensions, through the experiential itinerary of a Hungarian immigrant in his transit between Europe and Colombia. This transit is configured as a physical process, but also an imaginary one between the place of origin and the destination that shaped the identity and perspectives of the young Hungarian Imre Mikli, in his vital transformation to become the Colombian citizen Américo Mikli. The thesis develops a complex exercise of historization through a main source, the autobiography written by Imre Mikli Vig /. in 1997 under the title of El Emigrante, an unpublished document for never having been published, but also for its original conception. At the same time, it develops a set of historical scales between the micro and the macro that aims to make a family document useful, to build and debate the history of transatlantic migrations and their importance in understanding the contemporary configuration of Europe and Colombia.

In the course of the second decade of the 20th century, a set of changes and tensions emerged in some parts of Colombian society. Demands for improved living conditions and struggles for a broader transformation of society in general were promoted from various sectors. In this case study, anarchism and anarcho-syndicalism were some of the positions that various workers, bogas, tenants, men, and women adopted as a political option to confront their difficulties and formulate new organizational options. At the same time, along the banks of the Magdalena River, in its upper and lower basins, foreigners such as Nicolás Gutarra, Evangelista Priftis, Juan García García and Filipo Colombo travelled along the river. These anarchist foreigners established relations with different trade union nuclei and helped to found others. Through the analysis of the trajectories of these foreigners, as well as the unions, organizations, and committees of which they were part, it is possible to understand the tensions that these people and organizations established with certain “agents of order” such as the police, the judiciary and governmental bodies. In this way, the present research has a special axis of analysis in the attempts to build an order by people who in one way or another were related to anarchism and anarcho-syndicalism, and the tensions that this yearning, enterprise or political commitment generated in the judicial, police and governmental authorities.

The photograph of the deceased was a manifestation of the mortuary art of great value in some sectors of Medellín's society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There are two central themes, closely linked when it comes to this practice: photography, as a physical-chemical process with an aesthetic concern, and death, as a biological and sociocultural fact, which produces a reaction in the bereaved for the loss of a to be loved. The photograph of the deceased belongs to a modern symbolic construction of death.

Through the XIX century , the nation creation project included several elements associated to the routines and daily life of the population of the republic under construction. Being cuisine one of the elements considered, it was built from the male elite imaginary, but with women knowledge direct intervention. Although, the culinary identity construction on the XIX century was an approach made by women, it was built based on the female universe of the cookery and their oral knowledge.

This thesis studies the role played by physical education and sports in the construction of the liberal nation project in the thirties. Thus, it is stated that, during the Liberal Republic, both sets of practices were used with the dual objective of forging a national identity based on the formation of a population that possessed the same physical and moral traits acquired from physical exercise, and in turn, consolidate the modernization of the country through the corporal strengthening of the popular classes that were seen by the leaders of this party, as the workforce that would allow to realize their progressive projects.

After a historiographic analysis of Regeneration and in particular, of multiple academic works published between 1970 and 2020, the article identifies that there is no single Regeneration, but multiple Regenerations. The document focuses on four of them: political, constitutional, economic and cultural Regeneration. Despite being related to each other, each one is characterized by its own periodization, particular reforms, and unique subtopics. It is necessary, therefore, to speak of Regeneration without first detailing which one or which of them is being referred to.

This project was devoted to explore the cases of the first women students of the Universidad del Rosario, belonging to the Faculty of Jurisprudence, as a historical phenomenon that allows us to question gender stereotypes and the concomitant structural transformations. Thus, based on these experiences within the University and through their life trajectories, we offer an approach to some elements of the history of women in Colombia during the second half of the twentieth century.

The Korean War, one of the most important conflicts during the Cold War, was one of the international conflicts in which Colombia took part. The South American nation sent an infantry battalion, baptized "Colombia Battalion", to fight alongside the UN coalition led by the United States of America, against the communist armies of China and North Korea. At its comeback to Colombia, such battalion had to face the scaling situation of political violence in the country, therefore, applying what it learned in Korea to fight local enemies, doing so for the first time when they fought against the guerrillas operating around Villarrica municipality, in Tolima department.

The search for rural development in Colombia and the provision of agricultural credit was a constant between the decades of 1950 and 1980. Far from being free of debates and tensions, agricultural credit was central to the drive of agricultural technification, and the variation in its modalities shows the way in which this instrument was transformed in response to the atmosphere of discussion around Colombian agrarian problems, led by the state apparatus. Though outwardly it appeared to be neutral and technical, agricultural credit was designed to combat agrarian problems that were also interpreted to be product of technical failures, while fulfilling specific economic, political and social motives. Through the study of this atmosphere of debate and of the construction of a wide state bureaucracy –which characterized the activities of the Caja Agraria in Puente Nacional, Santander– I analyze the ways in which agricultural credits and associated services were carried out in Colombian rural areas to fuel a capitalist type of agricultural production. This structure shaped specific State-peasant relations and played a role in the more day-to-day aspects of peasant lives.

Tensions that led to the Colombo-Peruvian conflict began in September 1932, when citizens of Peruvian nationality stormed the port of Leticia, in the Colombian Amazon. Faced with this threat and given the inability to reach a solution through diplomatic channels, both governments responded with a military and diplomatic declaration, arguing that the other side violated sovereignty and previous treaties. Considering the great relevance of the press to promote nationalism on both sides, this thesis examines the impact of this conflict in terms of the creation of nationalist discourses, both in Peru and in Colombia based on a comparative analysis. In this sense, it seeks to address the impacts of the press on the construction of nationalist images while posing negative stereotypes of that emerging other as a clear threat to the sovereign interests of the nation and the reinforcement of national identity.

Since the 19th century, Colombia has experienced a number of conflicts which have changed actors and circumstances. Once reached the 20th century, conflicts rather than decreasing, have increased; so it is not surprising that the period of “La Violencia” (The Violence) has been one of the most violent and bloody of the country's recent history periods. Amid these problems, the National Front emerged, a political pact between the most important political parties in the country, the Conservative and Liberal. Amidst all these changes the Historical Commission of 1958 came up, which claimed the reason of “La Violencia”. Once this committee ended, a book with all the information gathered in the investigation is created. This book,“La Violencia en Colombia” (Violence in Colombia), became an event of great importance for colombian society, because it was a refreshing research for the Social Sciences, not only by the volume of information contained but because of the sociological theories used that were unseen in Colombia, it really transformed the Social Sciences and marked a before and after for these studies. Consequently, the book opened the path for studies of violence and the consolidation on violentology as a field of study, which brought positive and negative consequences for social sciences in general.

This research studies the Community Distribution of Contraceptives Program (PDCA) developed by Profamilia in Colombia between 1975-1989, in particular the actors involved in the construction and execution of the PDCA, as well as some concrete actions and program transformations during its validity The actors include international agencies, local entities such as the National Federation of Coffee Growers, the Colombian State and Profamilia, and little-tracked actors such as distributors or instructors. It also analyzes how and for what purpose different technologies were used -such as surveys, reports and statistical measurements- in the configuration of the PDCA. In this way, the negotiations that took place between the different actors for the consolidation and changes of the PDCA, as well as some instruments used in its construction and execution, are investigated. More generally, I show how, through the PDCA, transformations in the action of family planning in Colombia during the seventies and eighties can also be explored. Thus, through changes, interactions and the direction of this particular Program it is possible to see the way family planning operated in these two decades.

In the first decades of the 20th century, the journalistic work in the city of Quibdó was carried out by a small "white" group, called the Chocoan elite. This group was composed of politicians, merchants and writers, who presented in the Chocoan press, mainly in the newspaper A.B.C, a series of social speeches. Although the Chocó has been considered as a "black" region, those early speeches were characterized by a "silence" regarding racial issues, but with an emphasis on the riches and development of the region. These discourses did not express a reflection of what we now call "racial issues", but they had the interest of exposing the Chocó as a region of progress, similar to other "white" regions of the country, such as Antioch. However, from the 1930's and until the creation of the department of Chocó in 1947, a change in the speech is seen in the press as it begins to talk about issues about race and the "black", and a change in the Actors, since the new writers of this time would no longer be that small "white" ruling elite, but black politicians like Diego Luis Cordoba. These changes were significant because they lived together in a context where racism prevailed, but these new discourses failed to enhance the value of "black" issues.

The scene of political and intellectual mobilization related to the study of "black culture" in the country, since the mid-seventies, made the presence of black people in Colombia during the second half of the twentieth century a main subject in pioneering collective spaces who drew attention to the causes and consequences of racism in the country. Collective actors (study centers, movements, among others) led by people who shared the interest of "associating" voluntarily to express their doubts and opinions on two central issues: the contributions of black people in the history of the country and the lack of information about the situation of racial discrimination in Colombia. In this research, I analyze how the discourses against racial discrimination in the country were constructed, in these collective spaces led by black people from Bogotá. I evaluate the points of encounter and dissent in this complaint as a structural and current problem, in order to characterize the representations of the black people following the objectives and proposals of these first spaces founded by black people from the capital.

Having said that, the track down of Friedemann’s professional trajectory it is make through the characterization of her process of formation, the way in which she use the visual and writing languages as techniques to collect information and as a strategies to communicate the anthropological knowledge and, at last, the reconstruction of the webs of which Friedemann was part through all her life.

Addressing the convergence of political projects with the promotion of aesthetic experiences of the nation concept, this text deepens into the way the indigenous, being a subaltern subject, was ideologically constructed and subordinated to a modern nationalist paradigm, underlying the historical narration of music in Colombia and some Latin American countries, between the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The construction of the indigenous subject is developed through the analysis of notions related to stereotypes, prejudices, alienations, such as having been considered a necessary fragment within an imaginary whole, having been thought of as a primitive, timeless being in need of civilization, etc. These notions reveal a series of epistemic violence, structural in the constitution of the national project, which manifested through musical nationalism and the hemisphere, understanding that from the Musical Americanism. This study was propose through a historiographic analysis of publications made between 1867 and 1946 by actors belonging to intellectual elites, for understanding the impact of the Colombian and Latin American cultural press about the determination of imaginaries on otherness.
