It is identified that the amputations due to a diabetic arthropathy are more frequent than those caused by other diseases. However the amputations caused by cancer, atherosclerosis and infections are also prevalent. The amputation is an event highly significant for the person and demands a readjustment that is influenced by socio- demographic variables, and that has psychosocial consequences that requires the attention and accompaniment of an interdisciplinary team. In the preoperative period when there are manifestations of anxiety and subjective fears related to the amputation, the interventions are aimed at promoting the verbalization an identification of resources. In the postoperative period the process of adaptation and rehabilitation is accompanied with the management of the most demanding psychosocial consequences for the person.
