abstract = {The debate around the use of biotechnology is of increasing importance in the international context, due to the interaction of actors and interests that it implies. This was reflected in the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in Johannesburg-South Africa, between August 26 and September 4, 2002, which was attended by delegations from governments of developed and developing countries, international governmental and non-governmental organizations, multinationals and civil society groups. Among the topics discussed at the Summit, the use of biotechnology - understood as the application of the principles of science and technology to the treatment of materials by biological agents in the production of goods and services - was one of the most controversial , as it is related to the unequal distribution of wealth and development between developed countries (North) and developing countries (South). But what actors and interests are at the center of the international debate around the use of biotechnology? In this monograph, bibliographic-hemerographic, audiovisual and primary information is analyzed to identify the reasons why the use of biotechnology is related to the uneven development between North-South, clarifying the nature and interests of the national and international actors involved. , thus showing how the interests of the identified actors affect their position within the biotechnological debate. To illustrate this, agrobiotechnology is taken as a case study -understood as the application of biotechnology in the agricultural sector to develop products through genetic engineering-, showing the interests and positions of central actors, which in addition to generating tension North-South also generate North-North and South-South tensions, which make the biotechnological debate more complex.},
