AB - The seven articles in this issue, and the accompanying meta-analysis in Health Psychology Review [McEachan, R.R.C., Conner, M., Taylor, N., & Lawton, R.J. (2011). Prospective prediction of health-related behaviors with the theory of planned behavior: A meta-analysis. Health Psychology Review, 5, 97-144], illustrate the wide application of the theory of planned behaviour [Ajzen, I. (1991). The theory of planned behavior. AB - The current study explored the determinants of individual and collective pro-environmental behaviors in Germany and Japan. A self report questionnaire was sent to two random sample respondents by mail in Cologne, Germany (N=996) and Nagoya, Japan (N=531). Hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated an interaction between country of respondent and both individual and collective behaviors. For individual behavior, subjective norms played an important role in Japan where interpersonal relationship is emphasized, whereas perceived behavioral control played an important role in Germany. Social factors, such as the amount of network and subjective norms, affected collective pro-environmental behaviors in both samples. The results highlighted the importance of social factors in studies of collective pro-environmental behaviors.

AB - Governments worldwide have launched various schemes to promote recycling by

individuals, from legislation to voluntary and mandatory policies, waste charging,

kerbside collection, waste separation bins, and promotional campaigns. Much remains

to be done, however, in terms of understanding the psychological relationships

among consumers' attitudes, intentions, and behaviours when it comes to recycling.

This study was designed to examine recycling intention through the lens of the theory

of planned behaviour (TPB). Using online survey, we recruited participants (n =

827) through an online survey platform (mturk.com). The results show that TPB can

predict consumers' intention to recycle. It was further found, however, that attitude

towards recycling did not predict intention to recycle. The findings presented here

have significant implications for policymakers and practitioners who are interested in

inculcating recycling intention and behaviours in members of the public. This study

extends the TPB in the context of recycling. There is a need to examine the theories'

explanatory power in different research settings and context. Moreover, regulations

and policies on recycling continue to evolve. For example, recently in 2018, Australia

is banning plastic bag. Consequently, the new policy will affect people's perception

towards recycling. Hence, continued research on recycling is needed.

AB - This study investigated the usefulness of the theory of reasoned action for fast food restaurant patronage decisions. The theory of reasoned action was found to generalize across four samples drawn from the United States (N = 246), Italy (N = 123), The People's Republic of China (N = 264), and Japan (N =419). However, predictions under the theory of reasoned action were found to vary, depending on the social setting (eating alone or eating with friends) and cultural orientation (independent vs. interdependent). Among other results, subjective norms were found to influence decisions when eating with friends, but not when alone; the effects of attitudes, subjective norms, and past behavior on intentions were greater for Americans than Italians, Chinese, or Japanese; and in general, more explained variance occurred for Western (American, Italian) than Eastern (Chinese, Japanese) cultures.

AB - The goal of the present paper is a replication as well as an extension of the Hines et al. [(1986/87). Analysis and synthesis of research on

responsible environmental behaviour: A meta-analysis. Journal of Environmental Education, 18, 1–8] meta-analysis on psycho-social

determinants of pro-environmental behaviour. Based on information from a total of 57 samples the present meta-analysis finds mean

correlations between psycho-social variables and pro-environmental behaviour similar to those reported by Hines et al. In a second step,

the matrix of pooled correlations is used for a structural equation modelling (SEM) test of theoretically postulated structural relations

between eight determinants of pro-environmental behaviour (so-called Meta-analytic SEM (MASEM)). MASEM results confirm that

pro-environmental behavioural intention mediate the impact of all other psycho-social variables on pro-environmental behaviour

(27% explained variance). Results also confirm that besides attitude and behavioural control personal moral norm is a third predictor of

pro-environmental behavioural intention (52% explained variance). The MASEM also indicates that problem awareness is an important

but indirect determinant of pro-environmental intention. Its impact seems to be mediated by moral and social norms, guilt and

attribution processes

AB - The transition to more sustainable business requires comprehensive transformations of business models, and such innovation can benefit from business experimentation for sustainability (BES). In this paper, we investigate BES in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). The aim of our study is to investigate how a reiterative BES process can inform the design of more sustainable business models. Specifically, we experiment with greener value propositions, to reveal relevant barriers and strategic interventions to overcome them. In three interrelated studies conducted in collaboration with Norway's largest FMCG company Orkla, we investigate a BES process on refill-based business models for cleaning products, which are aimed at plastic reduction. We investigate consumer acceptance of such sustainable solutions in a focus group (study 1), drivers and barriers associated with the adoption of these solutions in a large-scale survey (study 2), and interventions aimed at overcoming relevant barriers for adoption in an online survey experiment (study 3). Our findings shed light on how BES can reveal actionable insights for business model innovation, related to (1) systematic barriers that need to be overcome to stimulate the adoption of more sustainable solutions, and (2) to behavioural interventions that can facilitate green consumption. Our empirical investigation thus contributes to the understanding of how reiterative BES can drive the transition to more sustainable business models.

AB - This paper examines how an individual's moral norms and demographic characteristics interact with the standard ‘Theory of Planned Behavior’ predictors (Attitude; Subjective Norms; and Perceived Behavioral Control (PBC)) in explaining the intention to recycle (RI). Our data originate from an empirical research of Greek citizens conducted in Autumn 2013 (N = 293). Through structural equation modeling, we find that PBC is consistently the most important predictor of RI. Moral norms have a larger effect on RI than Attitude while their influence is primarily direct. On the contrary, demographic characteristics were found to be statistically non-significant predictors of RI, similarly to Subjective Norms.

AB - A circular economy (CE) aims at decoupling value creation from waste generation and resource use by radically transforming production and consumption systems. Recent reviews on the topic of the circular economy have indicated that cultural barriers are a significant factor hindering the diffusion of so-called ‘circular’ business models, particularly the lack of consumer—or user—acceptance. However, none of them has provided an overview of the existing literature addressing such issues that can help academics and practitioners better understand consumption considerations when addressing the circular economy. Motivated by these observations, this paper presents the results of a literature review that summarises and discusses insights from 111 articles in terms of the problem area, theoretical approaches, methods, and tools that have been used to collect and analyse data, the main issues, and identified research gaps. The results show that most of the existing scientific work on the circular economy and circular solutions addressing consumption has focussed on identifying factors that drive or hinder the consumption of circular solutions. A smaller but expanding set of articles has focussed on offering insights into the nature, meaning, and dynamics of consumption in the context of the circular economy. According to this set of articles, consumption in the circular economy is anonymous, connected, political, uncertain, and based on multiple values, not only utility. A smaller set of papers has explored the integration of user and consumer perspectives into design processes. Although these contributions are relevant, opportunities for further research are still open, particularly regarding socio-material and cultural aspects of consumption in the context of the circular economy, and the role of digitalisation. In addition, more work could be done regarding strategies to foster not only acceptance but also the adoption and diffusion of the circular economy. Based on the findings of this literature review, some ideas for a research agenda on the issue of consumption in the circular economy are outlined.

AB - With evidence suggesting conservation attitudes and moral norms lack discriminant validity, the study’s

aim was to test if this could be established for recycling, as well as how moral norms can extend the

theory of planned behaviour (TPB). A sample of 271 participants that consisted predominantly of students

was obtained for this correlational study (117 males and 154 females, M age ¼ 24 years). Since

confirmatory factor analysis indicated convergent validity (r ¼ .69, p < .05), path analysis was conducted

on a model that replaced attitudes with moral norms in the TPB. This model was found to fit the data

well, with 39% and 41% of the variance in recycling intention and behaviour explained respectively.

Overall, results supported the utility of appealing to moral norms as it was associated with a higher

recycling intention (b ¼ .33, 95% CI [.23, .43]), and ultimately, actual recycling. With evidence suggesting conservation attitudes and moral norms lack discriminant validity, the study’s

AB - Recycling electronic waste (e-waste) is a major concern due to the risks associated with waste management, namely environmental pollution and negative consequences on individual health. Besides the need for appropriate policies and legislation for e-waste management, consumer awareness about recycling is an important factor. This paper discusses determinants of consumer intentions and behavior towards e-waste recycling in the major metropolitan areas of Brazil, where the consumption of electronic devices and appliances has significantly increased in the past decade. Modeling measures obtained from a general population survey sample after the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), we find that the majority of respondents hold a positive intention towards recycling electronic appliances - particularly, female, middle-aged individuals from lower income groups, and residents of the South-east region. Favorable views of recycling and the perceived social acceptance of recycling significantly explain the intention to recycle. In contrast, only a minority of respondents actually adopts adequate recycling practices connected to e-waste, a behavior which is socially skewed among the higher income echelons of Brazilian society. Differences and forces underlying this intention-behavior gap are discussed.

AB - A circular economy is a systemic approach to economic development designed to benefit businesses, society, and the environment. In contrast to the ‘take-make-waste’ linear model, a circular economy is regenerative by design and aims to gradually decouple growth from the consumption of finite resources.

AB - Society has been operating in a linear way which implies rapid waste generation. Previous research has shown business models able to reclaim products at end-of-use are currently poorly developed and implemented. A shift should be made to Circular Business Models (CBM) that focus on the re-use and recycling of materials. However, little is known about consumers’ acceptance and willingness to participate in CBMs. The present study aims to enrich the existing research on CBM consumer acceptance which currently lacks generalisable quantitative insights on preferential CBM design. The consumer intention to participate in three types of CBMs (take-back management, product lease and pay-per-use) is analysed emphasising three key characteristics: ownership, responsibility and payment structure. We use an established consumer behaviour theory, the Theory of Planned Behaviour and extend it with two main factors (environmental attitude and habits) in order to make it apt for analysing consumer preferences regarding environmental decision-making. Results show consumers’ clear preference for take-back management models over leasing or pay-per-use models. In particular, habits and consumer opinion regarding payment structures are revealed to have a large influence on consumer intention to participate in CBMs. Altered payment structures in leasing and pay-per use seem a crucial reason for lower acceptance. Ownership on the other hand had a marginal influence, which was not expected based on CBM literature. This suggests that institutionalised consumer habits have to be acknowledged and alternative characteristics have to be introduced gradually to reform habits. The results can serve as guidance for companies in their design and implementation of circular strategies to reclaim products after use. Future research should aim to more deeply understand the relation between consumers acceptance and the responsibility and payment structure characteristics of CBMs.

AB - Purpose Tourism and hospitality research is frequently cross language in nature; yet, English is the most used language to disseminate research findings. The use of thematic analysis is increasing; yet, critical discussions of the implications of the timing of translation when applying this method are rare. The purpose of this study is to present a model for bilingual researchers undertaking qualitative studies in their mother language who are reliant on their own language skills to translate and overcome language differences, and who are using thematic analysis.Design/methodology/approach Thematic analysis is a six-phase iterative analysis process during which the main themes are identified and a network of related themes is constructed to facilitate the interpretation of the material. The model is illustrated through reference to a research project carried out by the first author on the role and manifestation of intangible cultural heritage in tourism in protected areas in Iran.Findings The model introduces translation as an internal procedure within thematic analysis, situating it between the second and third phases when the codes are being consolidated into basic themes. Translation is viewed as a part of the iterative process of thematic analysis.Originality/value This model is the first to provide bilingual cross-language researchers with a practical and epistemologically, methodologically and ethically sound rationale for the timing of translation when using thematic analysis. While it was developed on a tourism case study, the authors believe it is applicable to research in other disciplines where cross-language qualitative analysis is used.

AB - The introduction of effective solid waste management strategies in developing countries should be considered for improving sustainability at global level. Many barriers should be overcome, concerning the introduction of environmental policies, effective investments, social inclusion and public awareness, which are significant issues in low-middle income countries. The Circular Economy could represent the answer for improving current solid waste management activities worldwide, since denote the principle of waste valorization and recycling for boosting developing economies. This paper is focused on this theme, analyzing main opportunities for improving the current state of solid waste management in developing big cities. The solid waste management of two countries are reviewed: Romania is the emerging country where Circular Economy is becoming a future objective due to economic aids and strength regulations which the European Union (EU) established for the nations forming parts the alliance; as a comparison, Bolivia is reported for evaluating main differences founded for developing recycling systems in a no-EU country. These two case studies could be of interest for highlighting main pros and cons of the participation into a wide organization like the EU for introducing in short terms Circular Economy principles. Moreover, a theoretical Circular Economy model for developing big cities in low-middle income countries is described within the study for effectively comparing which chances can spread for these countries as regard municipal solid waste exploitation. Despite the economic level, Romania and Bolivia are both facing with many solid waste management issues although in different magnitude. For the Romanian case study, it is visible how it cannot achieve the European goals for 2020 due the need of change in public recycling behavior. Bolivia, instead, represents the case where international aids and new investments are required, considering the informal sector into the formal management system as a real opportunity for improving local recycling rate. In conclusion, the comparison suggests how external supports led to implement the principles of the Circular Economy within a developing region. The model of Circular Economy proposed is recommended for developing big cities in order to advance a new form of safe employment, encouraging the activities that are still in action (i.e. informal sector) and boosting the principles of sustainable development.

AB - Over the last 15 years, business model innovation (BMI) has gained an increasing amount of attention in management research and among practitioners. The emerging BMI literature addresses an important phenomenon but lacks theoretical underpinning, and empirical inquiry is not cumulative. Thus, a concerted research effort seems warranted. Accordingly, we take stock of the extant literature on BMI. We identify and analyze 150 peer-reviewed scholarly articles on BMI published between 2000 and 2015. We provide the first comprehensive systematic review of the BMI literature, include a critical assessment of these research efforts, and offer suggestions for future research. We argue that the literature faces problems with respect to construct clarity and has gaps with respect to the identification of antecedent conditions, contingencies, and outcomes. We identify important avenues for future research and show how the complexity theory, innovation, and other streams of literature can help overcome many of the gaps in the BMI literature

AB - Purpose Extant literature provides insights about consumers’ purchase intentions (PI) and willingness to pay for reconstructed products but does not capture cross-cultural differences. The purpose of this paper is to understand consumers’ PI for reconstructed products in a cross-cultural setting for the development of circular economy. Design/methodology/approach The sample includes consumers from two diverse societies (India and the USA). The authors conduct two sets of analyses in this paper. The first analysis attempts to identify the difference between the Indian and US consumers’ PI for reconstructed products, who are residing permanently in their home countries. In the second analysis, the authors investigate the impact of socio-cultural norms on PI, for reconstructed products, of the Indian (USA) consumers relocated to the USA (India). In-depth interviews are conducted for data collection. Subsequently, data analysis was carried out using thematic analysis approach. Findings The results indicate that US consumers: possess altruistic buying behavior; are eco-centric toward waste disposal; strictly follow the regulations and socio-cultural norms; and have harmony orientation toward nature. In contrast, Indian consumers: possess utilitarian buying behavior; demonstrate anthropocentric attitude toward waste disposal; do not necessarily follow the regulations; and have mastery orientation toward nature. Practical implications At policy level, government in emerging economies should formulate regulations that promote the use of reconstructed products. At firm level, firms should exploit promotional and advertisement efforts to enhance awareness about reconstructed products. Originality/value The study is an early attempt in the literature to capture cross-cultural differences for reconstructed products.

AB - This article deals with the question of whether human action can be explained empirically by a psychological theory that refers to intentions, expectancies, and evaluations as determinants. In contrast with the majority of action theories in psychology and philosophy, a logical connection between action and intention is defended and, consequently, a causal relationship between action and intention is refuted. This is illustrated by reference to one of the most widely known and applied psychological action theories: the theory of planned behavior (I. Ajzen, 1991). However, the logical-connection argument can be circumvented if the existing research findings are reinterpreted as part of a psychology of intention. This article demonstrates the value of such an approach for future research. However, the final section of the article outlines some further fundamental theoretical difficulties for this perspective.

AB - The main objectives of this study are to (a) comprehend the definition of green consumption, (b) identify the products that are considered green by consumers, (c) understand the reasons behind green product consumption, and (d) decipher the possible implications of consuming green. To achieve these objectives, information-rich young consumers were depth interviewed. Subsequently, thematic maps were developed using thematic analysis technique. In that, three major themes emerged as (a) personal factors, (b) social factors, and (c) environmental factors. These findings have implications primarily for scholars as this paper advances prior literature on the theory of planned behavior by looking at green consumption through the lens of young Indians. Also, it has implications for marketers as they may formulate strategies to market their green products on the basis of the factors identified in the paper.

AB - The circular economy (CE) framework has captured the attention of industry and academia and received

strong policy support. It is currently deemed as a powerful solution for sustainability, despite ongoing

criticism on its oversimplification and lack of consideration of socio-ethical issues. In parallel, the concept

of RRI has emerged strongly with a strong focus on the integration of social desirability in innovation

under transparency, democracy and mutual responsiveness principles. In this paper, we critically

examine the literature on the CE and RRI in order to find out how the different focus of RRI may provide

an innovation governance framework to strengthen the CE framework. There are two main ways in

which RRI could further the CE: first, anticipating unexpected consequences, helping to break disciplinary

barriers and acknowledging systemic limits that are not currently taken into consideration; and

second, the integration of socio-ethical issues in the CE, and addressing the social implications of the CE

through stakeholder participation. However, future research should look at remaining blind spots of CE

and RRI, such as non-technological innovation, the demand-side of innovation and the development of

business models. With that objective, we suggest a research agenda for common development of the

frameworks.

AB - More attention has been given on consumer's behavioral attitude towards remanufactured products in

closed-loop supply chain literature. Till date, no research has been carried out on consumers' intention

towards returning the used products. The aim of this research is to develop a theoretical model to

examine the intention and perception of consumers' for retuning the used products and to explore the

various cues that consumers use for returning the Endeof-use and Endeof-life products. The model is

examined through an empirical study and the developed hypotheses are tested by conducting a survey

among the college graduated students and others (job holder and non-job holder) for specified electronics

products. Finally, the extent of return intention index of the consumers is computed using the

structural equation modeling. The results revealed that return intention is positively influenced by the

perceived benefit and social awareness, whereas negatively influenced by the perceived risk.

AB - The objective of this research is to explore young adults’ e-waste recycling behaviour cross-culturally using an extended Theory of planned Behaviour (TPB) model. The results of a survey involving respondents from the two culturally-distinct emerging markets showed that the key influencing factors that influenced e-waste recycling behaviour amongst young adults were: Attitude (moderated by a Sense of Duty), Perceived Control, Subjective Norm and Individual Responsibility whereas Convenience and Consequences Awareness constructs did not have significant influence. Cross-cultural differences were also evident as stronger relationships were witnessed for Perceived Control and Subjective Norm constructs for the Chinese young adults’ intention to recycle e-waste. The reverse was found to be true for Attitude (moderated by a Sense of Duty) and Individual Responsibility constructs where stronger relationships were observed in the Indian sample. This research makes a valuable theoretical contribution as it is positioned at the intersection of cross-cultural studies, sustainability and reverse supply chain management areas. This study has practical implication at two levels: the individual actor level and the supply chain level as consumers’ intentions to recycle, underpinned by responsibility towards environment, directly impact the performance of reverse supply chains.

AB - This paper presents an agent-based simulation model for end-of-life product flow analysis

in recuperation and recycling supply networks that focuses on individual consumer behaviors.

The simulation model is applied to a deposit-return program on wine bottles that could be developed

in the province of Quebec. Canadian data was used to calibrate and validate the model. A series of

experiments was then conducted with three artificial populations to analyse how they would react

to several implementation scenarios of this end-of-life product flow strategy. The results suggest

that the distance to the nearest depot is an important decision factor, but less predominant than

the ownership of a private vehicle and the deposit value. The results also indicate that the use of

agent-based modeling combined with the theory of planned behavior (TPB) can produce modular

behavior models, that are intuitive and simple, to better understand consumer-behavior-driven

supply chains. Such models can be used to give insights to decision-makers and policy-makers

about the potential performance of end-of-life product flows strategies and further facilitate efficient

resource management

AB - This study relied on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to identify the beliefs that influence young

people's pro-environmental behavior. High-school students completed a questionnaire regarding the

performance of pro-environmental behaviors early in the school year and reported on their behavior

toward the end of the year. In addition to the standard TPB constructs, the initial questionnaire assessed

descriptive norms, moral norms, sex, and empathic concern. Results revealed an excellent fit for the

standard TPB model; attitudes, descriptive subjective norms, and perceptions of control made independent

contributions to the prediction of intentions, and intentions together with perceived control

predicted behavior. Behavioral, normative, and control beliefs predicted, respectively, attitudes, subjective

norms, and perceived behavioral control. Empathic concern influenced intentions and behavior

indirectly by its effects on behavioral, normative, and control beliefs. Examination of the effects of

specific beliefs revealed important implications for designing effective behavior-change interventions

AB - Switching from the current linear model of economy to a circular one has recently attracted increased attention from major global companies e.g., Google, Unilever, Renault, and policymakers attending the World Economic Forum. The reasons for this are the huge financial, social and environmental benefits. However, the global shift from one model of economy to another also concerns smaller companies on a micro-level. Thus, comprehensive knowledge on designing circular business models is needed to stimulate and foster implementation of the circular economy. Existing business models for the circular economy have limited transferability and there is no comprehensive framework supporting every kind of company in designing a circular business model. This study employs a literature review to identify and classify the circular economy characteristics according to a business model structure. The investigation in the eight sub-domains of research on circular business models was used to redefine the components of the business model canvas in the context of the circular economy. Two new components—the take-back system and adoption factors—have been identified, thereby leading to the conceptualization of an extended framework for the circular business model canvas. Additionally, the triple fit challenge has been recognized as an enabler of the transition towards a circular business model. Some directions for further research have been outlined, as well.

AB - This review paper discusses determinants of pro-environmental behavior on Resources Conservation and

Recycling from 1987 to 2017. The main factors which influence pro-environmental behavior include both external

and internal factors—specifically, demographic variables and psychological factors. The main purpose of

this work is to review the literature (i.e., published studies) regarding the impact, relations, and mutual effects

on pro-environmental behavior of each group of factors. Identifying the determinants of pro-environmental

behavior is helpful when formulating the most appropriate and effective policies for improving the public’s

behavior toward protecting the natural environment.

AB - In their roles as purchasers, users and dischargers of used products, consumers play an important role in the circular economy. In this article, we put forward a ‘hierarchy of consumption behaviour’ to support European Union policymaking. Among the priorities are avoiding the purchase of single-use and unnecessary products, prolonging the lifetime of products through maintenance and engaging in repair activities. Moreover, the hierarchy intends to privilege sharing and leasing to buying and second-hand products to new ones. Finally, consumption in the circular economy also requires allowing products to re-circulate. Changing consumption patterns is difficult insofar as they are largely determined by the paradigm upon which our economy is built and are enabled by the existing legal framework, most notably European Union consumer law. The article contains concrete recommendations to develop European Union law and promote the proposed hierarchy.

AB - Free-floating car sharing allows customers to rent a shared car on a per-minute rate of use, with liberty of withdrawal and return. The present study aims to enhance the knowledge of motives for re-use of free-floating car sharing through the theory of planned behavior. A mixed-method research approach was adopted (integration of qualitative and quantitative data collection) to support the proposed hypothesis. The relationships among attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control, which influence the re-use intention, were tested through structural equation modeling. Our findings showed that economic, environmental, and social benefits indicate the attitude toward the free-floating car sharing and that attitude, perceived behavioral control, and subjective norm have a significant influence on the future intention to re-use the service. Our results also provide practical implications for operators to improve the quality of their offerings.

AB - Understanding how determinants of environmental behavior vary across countries and national cultures is an urgent, understudied need. The current research applies meta-analysis to test within the theory of planned behavior (TPB) the moderating role of country (development) and national culture (individualism-collectivism) characteristics, using the most recent research (2004–2014), involving 66 articles from 28 countries. The results suggest that in developed and individualistic countries, intention to behave environmentally is more likely to translate to actual behavior, and that attitudes toward the environment are related to environmental intention. Also, in developed countries perceived behavioral control is partially related to environmental intention. Furthermore, the environmental context studied influences the results.

AB - Refrigerated Display Cabinets (RDCs) are used in the retail sector to display chilled and frozen food, and beverages. The manufacture of RDCs is typified by the extensive use of materials and energy, meaning that the development of a Circular Economy in this sector is particularly important.

A number of behavioural barriers are preventing the development of the Circular Economy but an appropriate behaviour change intervention could help to overcome them. This paper investigates how effective the use of Persuasive Communication could be in influencing the Behavioural Attitudes, Product Perceptions and Behavioural Intentions towards the purchase of remanufactured RDCs. Participants in this study are engineers and academic experts of retail refrigeration equipment.

The study was carried out in three consecutive stages. In the first stage participants completed a questionnaire, which assessed their Behavioural Attitudes, Product Perceptions and Behavioural Intentions. In the second stage participants were exposed to the intervention, which was the Persuasive Communication in the form of an audio-visual presentation. In the third stage participants completed a second questionnaire which assessed the impact of the intervention. The results show that the Persuasive Communication had a positive impact on the participants' Behavioural Attitudes, Product Perceptions and Behavioural Intentions towards the purchase of remanufactured RDCs. This paper demonstrates how effective this type of intervention could be, if developed further to create a target market and generate demand for remanufactured RDCs.

AB - A Circular Economy is an economic and industrial system where resources are kept in use for as long as possible. This system is an alternative to the “take-make-use-dispose” path which is followed in many industries. Businesses can adopt a circular approach to production by implementing a range of alternative business models. These models require consumer acceptance, however a number of behavioural barriers are currently preventing the development and adoption of a Circular Economy. There is little research on behaviour change with specific regard to the Circular Economy. This is due to the concepts’ multidisciplinary scope which makes data collection methods expansive and challenging.

The Pro-Circular Change Model (P-CCM) is a novel theoretical framework, which uses a Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), Pro-Circular Values (P-CVs) and Persuasive Communication (PC) to identify and influence behaviours that can support the development of a Circular Economy. For the purpose of the model, behaviours that are brought about due to the prioritising of resource-efficiency were defined as Pro-Circular.

AB - In recent years, striking a balance between present consumption and resource management has been an important issue both in practice and theory. Although a number of studies have been conducted in this area, but looking at self-control as an influencer and controller of sustainable consumption has been scarcely explored. This study is based upon extensive literature review and aims at filling this gap by analyzing data from U.S. and India.

Taken collectively, the preceding arguments provide a strong motivation for approaching sustainability consumption from a holistic, psychological, and customer-centric observation. From acquisition to consumption and disposition, the study examines the relationships between individual trait self-control and purchasing of environmental friendly products, spending control, organic food eating, and recycling/reusing behaviors or wasting control. Going further, a conceptual framework based on theory of planned behavior provides a holistic view about sustainable consumption and individual personality variables

AB - To aid companies in transitioning towards a circular economy and adopting strategies such as reuse, repair, and remanufacturing, the concept of circular business models has been developed. Although the concept draws on contributions from various academic disciplines, and despite its increasingly frequent use, few scholars clearly define what a circular business model is. Understanding about what makes a business model circular is diverse, hampering the theoretical development and practical application of circular business models. This study aims to help frame the field of circular business model research, by clarifying the fundamentals of the concept from the perspectives of resource efficiency and business model innovation. Expanding on these findings, a review of how the concept is used in recent academic literature is provided. It shows that a coherent view is lacking on which resource efficiency strategies classify a business model as circular. This study clarifies which resource efficiency strategies can be deemed as relevant key strategies for circular business models, and suggests a new definition of the concept. With the definition grounded in analysis of the fundamentals in terms of resource efficiency and business models, the study contributes to theoretical advancement and effective implementation of circular business models.

AB - This study empirically examines the combined effect of two crucial internal consumer predispositions, self-identity (SI) and internal environmental locus of control (INELOC), among consumers in a collectivistic culture and an individualistic culture. The study validated the extended theory of planned behaviour to predict consumers' green purchase intentions. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse primary data collected from 365 American and 408 Indian respondents. Analysis revealed differences between the two cultures. Green self-identity influenced attitude more than perceived behavioural control among American consumers, while the reverse was true for Indian consumers. Conversely, INELOC positively and significantly affected only Indian consumers’ perceived behavioural control, not that of American consumers.

AB - Product—service systems (PSSs) are often outlined as potential enablers of new business models for circular economy. However, not all business models based on product-service systems have superior circularity potential. This research demonstrates how the application of a previously developed business model configurator for circular economy can support the design and assessment of customer value, economic and resource decoupling potential for product-service system business models in practice. By applying action research in two Nordic manufacturing companies from the furniture sector, different business model concepts based on product-service systems were proposed and assessed. Results indicate positive uptake by companies regarding the usefulness of the obtained outcomes. This research identified two key findings about ‘product-service system business models for circular economy’: (i) their configuration should fulfil certain simultaneous conditions—i.e., superior customer value, economic growth, and resource decoupling potential—to contribute to circular economy; and (ii) they are often ‘niche solutions’, fulfilling specific needs and customer segments, and more likely to flourish with certain types/characteristic of products, segments or geographical locations. Lastly, a framework outlining the conditions and trade-offs for assessing the circularity potential of business models based on product-service systems is introduced as one of the key contributions.

AB - Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly aware of the benefits of closing loops and improving resource efficiency, such as saving material costs, creating competitive advantages, and accessing new markets. At the same time, however, various barriers pose challenges to small businesses in their transition to a circular economy, namely a lack of financial resources and lack of technical skills. The aim of this paper is to increase knowledge and understanding about the barriers and enablers experienced by SMEs when implementing circular economy business models. Looking first at the barriers that prevent SMEs from realising the benefits of the circular economy, an investigation is carried out in the form of a literature review and an analysis of a sample of SME case studies that are featured on the GreenEcoNet EU-funded web platform. Several enabling factors that help SMEs adopt circular economy practices are then identified. The paper concludes that although various policy instruments are available to help SMEs incorporate circular economy principles into their business models, several barriers remain. The authors recommend that European and national policies strengthen their focus on greening consumer preferences, market value chains and company cultures, and support the recognition of SMEs’ green business models. This can be achieved through the creation of dedicated marketplaces and communities of practice, for example.

AB - Postmodern explanations of consumer behaviour stress social and psychological factors to the neglect of

explanations based on structural issues such as the working life conditions which favour a work-and-spend lifestyle,

the conditions of urban living or the effects of pervasive marketing. This paper argues that consumers may not be so

keen and willing but are rather locked-in by circumstances. Some of these circumstances are deliberately created by

other interests, and a policy to limit consumption must look for adequate means over a large and varied field. In the

end shorter working hours may be an important key to a more sustainable future. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All

AB - onsumer involvement plays a major role in the circular economy (CE), which requires a new and more active role of consumers. However, consumer awareness of and interest and involvement in the CE is low. Therefore, we aimed to find the starting points for consumer involvement in activities that promote a CE by exploring consumers’ general perceptions of the CE and several practice cases. Four focus group discussions were conducted (N = 24) in the Netherlands. The group discussions showed that most consumers did not have a clear understanding of the term “circular economy,” although their associations pointed in the right direction. Perceptions, attitudes, motives and barriers in terms of advantages and disadvantages varied among the participants and were related to (1) the functionalities of the products, (2) the production system, (3) economic aspects and (4) emotions such as concern about risks. We identified four key messages: targeting with regard to behaviours, attitudes and product functionalities; aligning with emotions; linking to practical cases; and applying multidimensional CE-related behaviour in everyday life and involving consumers in its innovation. These key messages are helpful in overcoming obstacles and barriers, raising awareness and providing input for sustainable consumption and production in the CE

AB - Green purchase can have an impact on organization bottom line. It also helps to build a positive public image, brand, and goodwill in the marketplace. The purchasing intention for the green products varies across culture, gender and individual behavior of a person.

This paper examines the impact of individual behavior on green purchase intention by applying constructs from Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). A conceptual model is developed in this research by linking cultural values from Hofstede dimensions and value orientation model by Kluchhohn and Strodtbeck (1961) to determinants of green purchase intention. The paper also examines the role played by gender on purchase intention through culture and behavior. Collectivism and Long-term orientation (LTO) dimensions are included from Hofstede and Man-nature orientation is included from Kluchhohn and Strodtbeck (1961) model.

The findings of the study suggest that collectivism is significantly related to all three predictors (attitude, subjective norms and Internal PBC) of green purchase intention in TPB whereas LTO is insignificantly related to attitude towards green products while examining the direct effects. Green purchase intention is also significantly related to Man-nature orientation.

The research shows the path to translate cultural values, norms, and beliefs of an individual into purchase intention. Therefore, the research provides an insight to practitioners and policy-makers on how to increase intention towards green products.

The study concludes that the awareness level regarding green products among individuals in India is still a matter of concern and therefore, practitioners and policymakers need to take efforts to make them knowledgeable about the same.

This volume includes the full proceedings from the 2016 Academy of Marketing Science (AMS) Annual Conference held in Orlando, Florida, entitled Creating Marketing Magic and Innovative Future Marketing Trends. The marketing environment continues to be dynamic. As a result, researchers need to adapt to the ever-changing scene. Several macro-level factors continue to play influential roles in changing consumer lifestyles and business practices. Key factors among these include the increasing use of technology and automation, while juxtaposed by nostalgia and “back to the roots” marketing trends. At the same time, though, as marketing scholars, we are able to access emerging technology with greater ease, to undertake more rigorous research practices. The papers presented in this volume aim to address these issues by providing the most current research from various areas of marketing research, such as consumer behavior, marketing strategy, marketing theory, services marketing, advertising, branding, and many more. Founded in 1971, the Academy of Marketing Science is an international organization dedicated to promoting timely explorations of phenomena related to the science of marketing in theory, research, and practice.

AB - The Theory of Planned Behavior, an extension of the well-known Theory of Reasoned Action, is proposed as a model to predict consumer adoption intention. Three variations of the Theory of Planned Behavior are examined and compared to the Theory of Reasoned Action. The appropriateness of each model is assessed with data from a consumer setting. Structural equation modelling using maximum likelihood estimation for the four models revealed that the traditional forms of the Theory of Reasoned Action and the Theory of Planned Behavior fit the data adequately. Decomposing the belief structures and allowing for crossover effects in the Theory of Planned Behavior resulted in improvements in model prediction. The application of each model to theory development and management intervention is explored.

AB - This study compared 3 models of waste management behavior: (a) a theory of reasoned action model, (b) an environmental belief‐behavior model, and (c) an integrated waste management model which is based on the theory of planned behavior. The three models were compared using data from a sample of over 1,400 individual respondents who each completed a survey and a 2‐week diary of their consumer composting activities. Overall, the results suggest that while the environmental beliefs‐behavior model and the integrated waste management models both fit the data well, the integrated waste management model provided better predictive power and offers significant insight into the factors that influence composting behavior.

AB - Change in consumer behavior that leads to increased waste separation and recycling has been identified

as a critical component of Chinese national strategy for constructing a “Circular Economy”. Various

innovative solutions at community level targeting consumer behaviors are emerging in Chinese cities,

using information technology that can track the volume and quality of the sorting process. In order to

evaluate the potential impact of these novel solutions, we studied the behavioral change of households

by initiating an experimental recycling program in a residential community in Beijing, and developed an

Agent Based Model based on Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to identify key factors in changing

behavior. The results show that the Social Norm (SN) has a decisive effect on whether an area starts

recycling or not. As to the effectiveness of intervention, the Perceived Behavioral Control (PBC) plays a

large role in the determination of the recycling behavior in this study, while the role of attitude is

relatively small. The model outcomes can be corroborated with observations in different communities

using similar technical solutions. In conclusion, we suggest that efficient local interactions among various

stakeholders are needed in forming the social norm and common space that favorite recycling activities

at the community level.

AB - This paper provides a review of the main findings concerning the relationship between the cultural syndromes of individualism and collectivism and personality. People in collectivist cultures, compared to people in individualist cultures, are likely to define themselves as aspects of groups, to give priority to in-group goals, to focus on context more than the content in making attributions and in communicating, to pay less attention to internal than to external processes as determinants of social behavior, to define most relationships with ingroup members as communal, to make more situational attributions, and tend to be self-effacing.

AB - Understanding proenvironmental consumption behavior may enable companies to establish reputational and competitive advantages. This study generates new insights by analyzing consumer-related factors related to distinct but

connected package-related behaviors regarding beverage consumption: purchase and postconsumption disposal. An online survey among 176 German

respondents provides empirical support for all but one hypothesis. The results

suggest that eco-friendly purchase and disposal decisions for beverages are

related to the environmental awareness of consumers and their eco-friendly

attitude. Furthermore, consumers are willing to trade off almost all product

attributes in favor of environmentally friendly packaging of beverages, except

for taste and price. The nonsupported hypothesis pertains to the expectation

that believing in the positive effects of own eco-friendly disposal actions will

guide ecological disposal behavior. Perceived behavioral control may thus not

translate into actual disposal behavior. Underlying this may be the belief that

individual actions are not enough to contribute to a greener world.

AB - In a linear economy, a product is manufactured and sold to a customer. Then, little concern is given to what the user actually does with it when they have it. However, in a circular economy where the aim is to circulate products at their highest level of value, the customer’s behaviour can become an important part of the system. Circular design strategies have tended to focus on the physical aspects of a product (e.g., disassembly, material selection), but the design of products and services can also have an influence on user behaviour and, to date, this aspect of circular design has not been fully explored. This project aims to define what key user behaviours are required for circular business models to work and to outline how design can enable these ‘circular behaviours’. This research project consists of a literature review, case study analysis and expert interviews with practitioners. A theoretical framework for designing products and services to encourage circular behaviour is developed. This work provides an initial step towards a better understanding of the user’s role in the transition to a circular economy as well as a preliminary model for how design for behaviour change strategies could be implemented in this context.

AB - Despite strong scientific data indicating associations among sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) and numerous adverse health outcomes, little is known about culturally specific beliefs and potential individual-level behavioral strategies to reduce SSB intake. The primary objective of this formative study targeting adults residing in rural southwest Virginia was to apply the Theory of Planned Behavior to investigate culturally specific attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control constructs related to the consumption of SSB, water, and artificially sweetened beverages. Using a homogenous sampling strategy, eight focus groups were conducted with 54 adult participants who exceeded recommendations of <1 cup of SSB/day. An experienced moderator and co-moderator utilized a semi-structured script, grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior, to execute the focus group. All focus groups were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. Three researchers independently coded meaning units to the major themes and subsequently met to gain consensus in coding. Important beverage-specific themes emerged for attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intentions. Across all beverages, the most notable themes included taste (n=161 meaning units), availability/convenience (n=95 meaning units), habit/addiction (n=57 meaning units), and cost (n=28 meaning units). Health consequences associated with beverages and water-quality issues also surfaced, as well as normative beliefs, including the influence of doctors and peers. The identified themes and subthemes provide critical insight into understanding culturally relevant context and beliefs associated with beverage consumption behaviors and helps inform the development and evaluation of future intervention efforts targeting SSB consumption in the health disparate region of southwest Virginia.
