The Transformation of a Capital Neighborhood: The Experience from the Residents of Barrio Escalante together with the Gastronomic Commerce

Summary
El presente artículo tiene como finalidad describir la experiencia de los y las residentes delbarrio Escalante, ubicado en el distrito El Carmen en la capital de Costa Rica (San José). Esteasentamiento data de la primera mitad del siglo XX y en la última década atraviesa una seriede transformaciones urbanas, principalmente: los cambios de uso del suelo, del perfil de laciudad y de la vocación hacia actividades comerciales y turísticas. En este texto se muestran los resultados de una encuesta aplicada a las personas residentes durante el último semestre del año 2018, así como entrevistas en profundidad. Como resultados importantes están: las dificultades para residir en el barrio, la falta de participación ciudadana y las decisiones políticas sobre la ciudad sin la consulta a quienes la habitan.
Abstract
"The purpose of this article is to narrate the experience of the residents of barrio Escalante, located in district El Carmen in the capital San José of Costa Rica. This settlement datesfrom the first half of the 20th century and in the last decade it goes through a series of urban transformations mainly: the changes in land use; the profile of the city and the vocation tocommercial and tourist activities. This article shows the results of a survey applied to residents during the last semester of 2018 as well as in-depth interviews. As important results are: the difficulties to reside in the neighborhood; the lack of citizen participation and political decisionsabout the city without consulting those who inhabit it."
