dc.description.abstract• Introduction: Sleep is one of the main aspects that suffer great variations during adolescence, which is affected by biological factors as well as by affective and emotional states. In this stage, individuals establish their first romantic relationships, essential ties to the maturation of the social and psychosexual relationships. This paper seeks to determine the association between romantic love relationships and their characteristics, with the perceived sleep quality by young people. • Methodology: Survey conducted in a population of 1794 science of health students between 18 and 25 years old in Bogotá, Colombia, between 2012 and 2013. We obtained a random sample with proportional allocation of 443 subjects, stratified by sex and academic program. Using two self-report questionnaires we explored the characteristics of romantic relationships and perceived sleep quality. • Results: The 64% (CI 95%: 59, 4 -68, 9%) of the studied population was in a romantic relationship. These individuals had prolonged sleep latencies less often than those without a romantic relationship (p <0,05). Sleep quality perception was associated with the level of satisfaction that the subjects had in their relationships as to the attraction to their partner. Obsessive, anxious, fearful and avoidant features in the relationship decreased perceived sleep quality. • Conclusion: Romantic relationships and their characteristics are associated with the sleep quality perception in the individuals. More studies are needed to determine causality in this association and potential intervention strategies about this matter.
