Abstract
The Cauca–Romeral Fault System (CRFS) is one of the major tectonic structures of northwestern South America and represents the tectonic suture associated with the accretion of the Caribbean Large Igneous Province (CLIP) onto the northwestern South American continental margin. However, its kinematics, deformation conditions, temporal evolution, and tectonic reactivation history remain poorly constrained. This study reconstructs the tectonic reactivation, deformation, metamorphic, and exhumation history of the northern segment of the CRFS along the Cauca Canyon through the integration of field observations, petrographic and microstructural analyses, and apatite U–Pb geochronology and apatite fission-track (AFT) thermochronology. The results reveal mylonitic belts developed within the Santa Fe Batholith, Barroso Formation, Sucre Amphibolite, and Quebradagrande Complex. Deformation microstructures and mineral assemblages indicate greenschist-facies conditions (~300–500 °C), whereas kinematic indicators record predominantly dextral shear with a reverse component. Apatite U–Pb ages (~76–68 Ma) constrain the timing of mylonitization and record a tectonothermal event associated with reactivation of the CRFS during oblique CLIP accretion in the Late Cretaceous. In contrast, AFT ages (30–28 Ma) document a later stage of cooling and exhumation during the Paleogene–Oligocene. These results indicate that the CRFS acted as a major crustal-scale structure accommodating dextral transpressional deformation, greenschist-facies metamorphism, and exhumation during CLIP accretion. Subsequently, the system continued to record cooling, exhumation, and probable episodes of tectonic reactivation under shallower crustal conditions during the Cenozoic, highlighting its role in the tectonic evolution of the northwestern Andean margin.
