Health loss is one of the aspects that have a major impact on human well-being. Nowadays, in spite of more insurance coverage and an improved quality in health services, diseases rates are increasing, generating significant repercussions at the individual and collective levels. An explanatory framework for these phenomena is now emerging, associated to the concept of adherence, and considerable interest has been focused recently on this. The main purpose of this study was to conduct a review of the scientific writing on the matter, aimed at updating and conceptually deepening the construct of “adherence to treatment” and its dimensions. Taking as conceptual basis the classification established by the World Health Organization (who), the scientific literature published between 2003 and 2017 was screened to address the core issues of this research. An updating of the elements associated to adherence to treatment and its dimensions was made. Likewise, the notion of this concept was complemented with key aspects that had not been taken into account previously. This analysis added relevant content about the dimensions associated to modifiable factors, factors that are linked directly to the health psychology field of action and to its fundamental role in the different areas of health care. These findings provide relevant information leading to an optimization of the programs aimed at promoting and intervening towards the improvement of the individuals’ adherence behavior.spa
