Resumen
Esta obra da cuenta de la reEste libro muestra la regulación de unos de los agentes tóxicos más poderosos creados por la sociedad humana: los desechos, químicos peligrosos y contaminantes orgánicos persistentes (pesticidas prohibidos). El análisis investigativo evidencia una serie de casos de contaminación ambiental y afectaciones a la salud, pasando por el crimen corporativo, la política económica y alimentaria, poniendo de presente, la necesidad y la urgencia de dar un mayor alcance al régimen y los esfuerzos de la comunidad internacional, para afrontar los patrones que dañan y amenazan la vida en la tierra, pues el riesgo es tal, que no hay manera de proteger una ciudad o un país aislado, sino todo el planeta en su integridad. Esta investigación se enfoca en la respuesta de la comunidad científica e internacional, destacando el proceso histórico, las afectaciones en la salud, el daño ambiental y los tratados internacionales existentes en el seno de las Naciones Unidas.
Abstract
This book outlines the international regulation of some of the most powerful toxic agents created by human society, wastes, hazardous chemicals and the infamous persistent organic pollutants (banned pesticides). This research focuses on the historical process of the impacts on human health and the environment from these polluting activities, and the response of the scientific and international community to provide relief and direction to the issue through a set of international treaties within the United Nations. We draw attention to the very serious and mostly unknown danger posed by hazardous wastes and chemicals, especially in developing countries. The role of the different actors involved, including civil society, scientific organizations, private and business sector, and national and international institutions is also explored, establishing their routes of participation, agreements, controversies, policies and financing, as well as the scope and the effectiveness of the regime at the international level and in Colombia. The investigative analysis shows how around the current regulation, a series of cases of environmental contamination and affectations to health occur, ranging from corporate crime to economic and alimentary policy, taking into account the necessity and the urgency, to grant a greater reach to the regime and efforts of the international community, to curb the patterns that harm and threaten life on earth, because the risk is such that there is no way to protect a city or an isolated country, but the planet as a whole.
