Social instability triggers diverse physiological and endocrinological stress responses that can affect social decisions. Stress-induced hormonal fluctuations regulated by the HPA-axis modulate social and memory processes. In this study, I evaluated the effect of social instability on social preference and recognition in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), and measured blood cortisol (CORT) and oxytocin (OT) levels. My results showed that social instability affects social preference but did not significantly affect on social recognition or CORT or OT levels. These findings suggest that social instability affects social processes such as social decision-making processes, independently of immediate changes in circulating CORT and OT, contributing to our understanding of the interplay between social stress and social behavior.
