| spa |
dc.description.abstract | Background: Multiple benefits of Physical Activity (AF) and Physical Exercise (EF) have been documented, on the health of women before and during pregnancy, however, evidence in the postpartum period is scarce. Objective: To establish the benefits of physical activity on physical fitness of the mother and in the childs neurodevelopment during the first postpartum year. Methods: A systematic review was carried out through the application of PRISMA methodology in three databases: MEDLINE, Scopus and CINALH between October 2018 and April 2019, identifying the publications since 1994 that included Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) in humans, in English, Spanish and Portuguese, whose intervention was physical activity or exercise accompanied or not by diet; Physical fitness of mother and the neurodevelopment of the child were defined as the main outcome variables. The methodological quality of studies and completeness in report of the interventions with exercise were evaluated. Results: Of the 5224 titles not initially duplicated, 10 RCTs were selected. Both the interventions with postpartum exercise and the outcomes were diverse. The interventions were mainly focused on aerobic exercise (walking) of moderate intensity, without prescription and unsupervised, mostly mediated by counseling. In general, a positive association was found between the practice of EF or AF during postpartum with the output variables. Conclusion: These findings suggest that PA in the postpartum period has a positive association with physical fitness, decreased depression and a better quality of life in postpartum women; there is not enough evidence to suggest an association with the neurodevelopment of their offspring. | spa |
