El concepto cambiante de la "Public Health" Norteamericana a finales del siglo XIX e inicios del siglo XX: una construcción utilitarista (1880-1915)

dc.descriptionLa Public Health estadounidense –entendida como un cuerpo especifico de conocimiento y sus aplicaciones-, jugó un papel definitivo como elemento transformador continental, desde las últimas dos décadas del siglo XIX, hasta las dos primeras décadas del siglo XX. Su importancia trascendió lo científico, modificando los ámbitos geopolíticos y socioculturales de América. El objetivo de esta investigación fue identificar los diferentes elementos que se conjugaron en la constitución del concepto de Public Health, como elemento de intervención continental. Esta investigación usa un marco de análisis constructivista, a partir de la Teoría de Campo Social de Pierre Bourdieu, definiendo a sus agentes como "actores políticos relevantes", siguiendo la propuesta de Susana Belmartino y Carlos Bloch. Complementa este marco de análisis la metodología propuesta por Emilio Quevedo y colaboradores, de la redistribución del campo de la salud, dividiendo estos actores en tres subcategorías: La salud del público, Las profesiones y la salud para el público. Desde esta mirada se pueden observar dos elementos claros que convergen en el concepto de Public Health de finales del siglo XIX y su aplicación en los albores del siglo XX: la reconfiguración del campo de la salud en Estados Unidos y los intereses comerciales norteamericanos en la Región.spa
