| dc.description.abstract | By 2015 roughly 25% of the urban ground in Bogotá had been used informally, and from this percentage 40% of the population inhabited it. (Universidad Nacional de Colombia 2015) Alto Fucha, a group of neighborhoods in the locality of San Cristóbal, Bogotá Colombia, exemplifies this panorama. In this case study, the relationship of the community with the river Fucha has shaped their way of living, and while it has been a vital pillar, it has also been a focus of conflict. The present project seeks to rebuild the bond of the community with the territory, focusing on children and elderly people. From this starting point the architectural strategies are established, taking advantage of the “informal” context to find new ways of creating safe spaces for care and interaction, prioritizing accessibility, using ludic tools as a means of gathering and learning, and the use of local materials that trigger collective memories. In these peripheric neighborhoods “informal” practices like self-building proliferated between the diffused limit of the urban and rural ground due to the vital essence of the Fucha river. However, with the legalization of the neighborhoods in 2015, several people were relocated and dispossessed from their homes due to high risk of landslide events, transforming these previously inhabited places into urban voids. This process, along with the arrival of the aqueduct, gradually eroded the once close and daily bond with the river. Over time, a negative collective perception of the river took shape, linking it to insecurity and impermanence. Through interviews, mapping, and participatory activities, the architectural design draws on the community’s lived experience, allowing strategies to arise from within their own territory. These strategies place accessibility at the core as a condition for equity, integrate ludic activities as an act of gathering and resistance, and employ materials from the familiar landscape as catalysts for memory. In doing so, opportunities arise to strengthen the sense of belonging and restore trust in the river. This project seeks to explore how public space and materiality can become a stage for healing the fragmented social fabric and rebuilding the community’s relationship with the river. Children and older adults are the focus groups, as they are united by a particular closeness: both stages of life reveal a vulnerability that deserves to be acknowledged and nurtured. Recognizing this duality as a strength allows us to imagine shared spaces that foster mutual care, the transmission of knowledge, and the strengthening of a shared sense of belonging. The challenge lies in avoiding the reproduction of exclusionary logics in public space and to harness the “informal” nature of the territory to envision more just collective ways of inhabiting, grounded in the resourcefulness and community-driven self-management. | |
