| dc.description.abstract | In this paper, we evaluate how student tutorials influence economics students' academic performance at one of Colombia's best universities. We use data from repeating and non-repeating students. Therefore, we used two methodological approaches to identify the causal effect: difference in differences (repeats) and nearest neighbor matching (non-repeaters). Our results show that attending tutoring facilitated by other students improves course grades. On average, the effect is 0.55 standard deviations of performance for repeaters and 0.18 standard deviations for non-repeaters. We found heterogeneous effects by gender (women experience a greater effect), size of the study group, location, and faculty to which the students belong. Triangulation with information obtained in focus groups with student-tutors confirms these results. The mentioned results are robust to several econometric tests and different specifications. | |
