dc.descriptionComo su título lo sugiere, el volumen colectivo aquí reseñado examina la importancia de las imágenes en la historia moderna y contemporánea de América Latina, a la vez que plantea una relexión sobre las posibilidades documentales y analíticas que estas ofrecen para el estudio de nuestro pasado. El libro es un ejemplo de cómo el campo de los estudios visuales ha impactado de manera positiva la historiografía, lo cual ha permitido la aparición de diversas investigaciones que abordan la relación entre cultura visual e historia2 . Como nos recuerda Peter Burke en la introducción de su libro Visto y no visto, cada vez son más los historiadores que se atreven a trabajar con imágenes, empleándolas no como meras ilustraciones, sino como documentos históricos3 . Para ir más lejos, podríamos añadir que son cada vez más los historiadores que usan las imágenes no solo como fuentes, sino como parte central de sus propuestas narrativas y explicativas4 . Los textos reunidos en Imaginando América Latina son casos de estudio en donde «la historia se escribe a partir de imágenes», y se plantea todo el tiempo la pregunta por el lugar de la imagen en el oicio de historiador, en un contexto de «hipervisualidad contemporánea», caracterizado por la amplia producción, circulación y consumo de imágenes en diversos medios, principalmente en el internet (p. 2).spa
dc.description.abstractAs its title suggests, the collective volume reviewed here examines the importance of images in the modern and contemporary history of Latin America, at the same time that it raises a reflection on the documentary and analytical possibilities that these offer for the study of our past. The book is an example of how the field of visual studies has positively impacted historiography, which has allowed the emergence of various investigations that address the relationship between visual culture and history2. As Peter Burke reminds us in the introduction to his book Seen and Not Seen, more and more historians dare to work with images, using them not as mere illustrations, but as historical documents3. To go further, we could add that there are more and more historians who use images not only as sources, but as a central part of their narrative and explanatory proposals4. The texts gathered in Imagining Latin America are case studies where 'history is written from images', and the question is posed all the time about the place of the image in the historian's occupation, in a context of 'hypervisuality' contemporary ', characterized by the wide production, circulation and consumption of images in various media, mainly on the internet (p. 2)spa
