Abstract
The following investigative work is a study where the possibility of using marijuana hemp as an industrial material for the production of plastics in Colombia is evaluated. Hemp was a great protagonist as a fiber in various industries until the 19th century then it became a forgotten industry. A greater degree of awareness about the environmental impacts generated by the plastics industry such as the well-known (“garbage patch”) islands of plastics of the Pacific of 20 million square kilometers (National Geographic, 2019). And the law 1787 of 2016 that allows the granting of 4 types of licenses of the cannabis industry are key to thinking about the implementation of hemp. Products such as containers and packaging that are produced with natural fibers over traditional inputs would have considerable advantages throughout the supply chain that, as the backbone of the production system, must guarantee the successful bijective interaction between its actors and the fundamental exchange of three flows: money, information and products and / or services in an effective and constant way and according to world trends. The research consists of a review and historical analysis of the use of hemp until its fall in the 20th century and the recent years. Then some success stories in the substitution of plastics with natural fibers will be addressed while analyzing the willingness of consumers to buy these products to establish the economic and legal viability of the use of industrial hemp in Colombia and the supply chain that fits contemporary challenges.
