This systematic review of literature aimed to investigate sub-threshold depression (SD), a type of depression whose characteristics dissatisfy the necessary criteria for a clinical diagnosis pertaining to the different diagnostic manuals. Different studies have shown that this condition has important implications for the functioning and well-being of people. This review of 66 publications attempted to clarify the SD concept, identify it's prevalence, and the different factors associated with it, and also the prodromal nature of SD of the main clinical manifestations of depression. In addition, an attempt was made to identify evidence of some possible interventions related to this condition. From the information gathered, it was found that factors associated with SD include physiological changes, cognitive changes, suicidal risk and also a risk of rising towards a complete depressive syndrome. On the other hand, a variability was found in the prevalence, which depended on the way that DS is operationalized. Finally, it was found that the main treatments that showed efficacy on depressive symptomatology in individuals with DS were therapies based on the cognitive-behavioral model, mainly those carried out by telephone or the internet.eng
