Explorando la identidad profesional y las relaciones interprofesionales en Cirugía Oral y Maxilofacial en Colombia

dc.descriptionIntroducción: La cirugía oral y maxilofacial (COMF) en Colombia, es una especialidad odontológica enfocada en el tratamiento de diversas condiciones del macizo craneomaxilofacial y de áreas afines que comparte con diversas disciplinas del área médica. Actualmente, existen pocos estudios que analicen cómo se ha construido la identidad profesional (IP) de los odontólogos-cirujanos orales y maxilofaciales (O-CxOMF) en entornos interprofesionales donde interactúan con especialistas del área médica y odontológica. Este estudio se propone explorar la construcción de la IP de los O-CxOMF en entornos interprofesionales, los desafíos interprofesionales que han enfrentado y realizar su análisis bajo una perspectiva crítica. Métodos: Este estudio cualitativo, con enfoque crítico, incluyó a 20 participantes: 4 residentes y 16 especialistas O-CxOMF. La recolección de datos se llevó a cabo mediante 20 encuestas y entrevistas semiestructuradas realizadas a 5 de los participantes, considerando la diversidad de sus experiencias, niveles de formación y contextos laborales. El análisis de los datos combinó un enfoque descriptivo, basado en medidas de frecuencia, con un análisis temático utilizando en el software Quirkos®. Como estrategia de validez, se empleó la triangulación de fuentes. Resultados: El estudio muestra que los O-CxOMF en Colombia poseen una IP sólida, construida a partir de su formación académica, experiencia clínica y colaboración interdisciplinar, lo que refuerza su sentido de pertenencia, orgullo y compromiso profesional. No obstante, las relaciones interprofesionales se han visto influenciadas por competencias territoriales y jerarquías, que han impactado su práctica y reconocimiento profesional cono O-CxOMF. Algunos participantes mencionan haber experimentado estereotipos y prejuicios que generan barreras laborales y académicas, aunque sin afectar de manera significativa su IP. El estudio propone estrategias para promover una mayor inclusión y reconocimiento, como la participación en comités, la formación interprofesional y el fortalecimiento de los programas académicos en odontología, destacando la necesidad de comprender la IP desde perspectivas individualizadas dada la diversidad de percepciones entre los profesionales. Discusión: El presente estudio explora la IP y las relaciones interprofesionales de los O-CxOMF en Colombia, destacando una IP sólida, construida a partir de su formación académica dual, experiencia clínica y colaboración interdisciplinar. Aunque enfrentan desafíos relacionados con estereotipos, jerarquías tradicionales y falta de reconocimiento, los participantes también identifican su formación dual como una ventaja que refuerza su compromiso y capacidad para abordar necesidades complejas. Asimismo, se percibe un cambio positivo en la percepción de la especialidad, impulsado por su impacto en la salud general y la implementación de equipos interprofesionales. A pesar de sus limitaciones, este estudio proporciona información valiosa para fortalecer la IP, mejorar las relaciones interprofesionales y fomentar el desarrollo de la especialidad en beneficio de la atención en salud. Conclusión: Los O-CxOMF en Colombia poseen una IP sólida, sin embargo, enfrentan tensiones interprofesionales y estereotipos derivados de jerarquías tradicionales y percepciones sobre el rigor académico de la odontología, lo que afecta su autoestima, satisfacción laboral y oportunidades profesionales. A pesar de estas barreras, se observa un cambio positivo en la percepción de la especialidad, impulsado por un mayor reconocimiento de su impacto en la salud general y la creciente integración en equipos interprofesionales. Este estudio destaca la necesidad de futuras investigaciones y políticas orientadas a reducir estereotipos, fomentar la educación interprofesional y fortalecer el rol de los O-CxOMF, contribuyendo a una atención sanitaria más inclusiva y efectiva.
dc.description.abstractIntroduction: Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) in Colombia is a dental specialty focused on treating various conditions of the cranio-maxillofacial complex and related areas that it shares with various disciplines in the medical field. Currently, there are few studies that analyze how the professional identity (PI) of oral and maxillofacial surgeons (O-CxOMF) has been constructed in interprofessional settings where they interact with specialists in the medical and dental fields. This study aims to explore the construction of the PI of O-CxOMFs in interprofessional settings, the interprofessional challenges they have faced, and to analyze them from a critical perspective. Methods: This qualitative study, with a critical approach, included 20 participants: 4 residents and 16 O-CxOMF specialists. Data collection was carried out through 20 surveys and semi-structured interviews with 5 of the participants, considering the diversity of their experiences, levels of training, and work contexts. Data analysis combined a descriptive approach, based on frequency measures, with a thematic analysis using Quirkos® software. Source triangulation was used as a validity strategy. Results: The study shows that O-CxOMFs in Colombia have a solid professional identity, built on their academic training, clinical experience, and interdisciplinary collaboration, which reinforces their sense of belonging, pride, and professional commitment. However, interprofessional relationships have been influenced by territorial competencies and hierarchies, which have impacted their practice and professional recognition as O-CxOMFs. Some participants mention having experienced stereotypes and prejudices that create professional and academic barriers, although without significantly affecting their IP. The study proposes strategies to promote greater inclusion and recognition, such as participation in committees, interprofessional training, and strengthening academic programs in dentistry, highlighting the need to understand IP from individualized perspectives given the diversity of perceptions among professionals. Discussion: This study explores the IP and interprofessional relationships of O-CxOMFs in Colombia, highlighting a solid IP built on their dual academic training, clinical experience, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Although they face challenges related to stereotypes, traditional hierarchies, and lack of recognition, participants also identify their dual training as an advantage that reinforces their commitment and ability to address complex needs. Likewise, there is a positive change in the perception of the specialty, driven by its impact on overall health and the implementation of interprofessional teams. Despite its limitations, this study provides valuable information to strengthen IP, improve interprofessional relationships, and promote the development of the specialty for the benefit of health care.
