This dissertation brings together three empirical papers that examine key dimensions of the integration process of Venezuelan migrants in Colombia: access to legal work authorization and persistent occupational mismatch, the prevalence of beliefs in the host society linking migrants to insecurity, and the evolution of the effects of migration on the labor market in the presence of a large shock such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The first chapter shows that work permits strengthen labor market attachment, particularly among migrants with weaker pre-migration labor force participation, but have limited effects on occupational mobility and job quality. The second chapter studies whether locals perceive that migrants increase insecurity in the city and, to identify the prevalence of this belief, implements a list experiment in Cali, Colombia, which allows for the indirect elicitation of socially sensitive attitudes and mitigates social desirability bias associated with direct questioning. The third chapter shows that Venezuelan migration reduced employment and wages and increased informality among locals and earlier migrants, with effects that vary over time and intensify during the pandemic, while migrants with longer residence exhibit greater resilience. Overall, the results suggest that migrant integration depends not only on legal access to work, but also on the social environment and the macroeconomic conditions under which adjustment takes place.
