Impact of child marriage legislation on women’s developmental outcomes in Ecuador

| dc.description | Esta tesis analiza el impacto de la reforma del Código Civil de Ecuador en 2015, que prohibió el matrimonio infantil al establecer la edad mínima para contraer matrimonio en 18 años sin excepciones, sobre outcomes de desarrollo de niñas y mujeres. Para evaluar sus efectos, se emplea un modelo de efectos fijos con tratamiento continuo, considerando la prevalencia del matrimonio infantil en los cantones antes de la reforma como medida de intensidad del tratamiento. El estudio examina su influencia en la tasa de finalización de la educación secundaria, la edad en que las mujeres tienen su primer y segundo hijo, y otros indicadores de maternidad. Los resultados revelan una mejora significativa en la tasa de finalización de la educación secundaria, particularmente en las zonas donde el matrimonio infantil era más común antes de la reforma. Sin embargo, el impacto en la edad de la maternidad y otros resultados relacionados fue más limitado y presentó efectos mixtos. Este estudio contribuye a la literatura sobre políticas de matrimonio infantil en América Latina, destacando tanto los beneficios como las limitaciones de las intervenciones legales en contextos donde estas prácticas siguen siendo frecuentes. | |
| dc.description.abstract | This paper examines the impact of Ecuador’s legislation prohibiting child marriage on the developmental outcomes of girls and women. It focuses on the 2015 reform that established the minimum legal age for marriage at 18 without exceptions. The study employs a two-way fixed effects model with continuous treatment to measure the impact on high school completion rates, age at first and second birth, and other maternity outcomes. The analysis employs variations in the prevalence of child marriage across cantones prior to the reform as a measure of treatment intensity. The findings indicate that the reform resulted in a significant improvement in high school completion rates, particularly in areas with higher rates of child marriage prior to the reform. However, the impact on maternity outcomes was more limited, showing mixed results. This study contributes to the limited body of research on child marriage policies in Latin America, highlighting both the potential benefits and the limitations of nationwide, strictly enforced legal interventions in a region where such practices remain prevalent. | |
