dc.description.abstract | Background: Conjunctivitis is the most common cause of red eyes, viral conjunctivitis being the most common of all. However, its diagnosis still represents a challenge for health staff since the clinical signs and symptoms are varied, therefore, a precise and timely diagnosis guarantees adequate treatment. Viral conjunctivitis generally does not require the use of medications, however, the use of drugs that help to improve symptoms such as Dexamethasone are common in clinical practice. Objective: To synthesize the information on the use of dexamethasone and adjuvant in viral conjunctivitis. Method: A literature review was conducted in Pubmed, Cochrane, Medline, Lilacs and Scielo, using the words MeSH and their connectors, before June 30, 2020 about the use of topical Dexamethasone and Dexamethasone plus an adjunct in the treatment of conjunctivitis adenoviral. Articles on randomized clinical trials published in the last 10 years were included. The CONSORT methodology was used to assess the quality of the evidence. Results: 5 articles were included that report on the effectiveness of Dexamethasone in viral conjunctivitis, which is also observed in association with povidone iodine, causing clinical improvement and improvement in the clinical symptoms perceived by the patients, who obtained a level high in the quality of each study according to the CONSORT criteria. Conclusions: Dexamethasone and the association with povidone iodine offer clinical improvement in viral conjunctivitis with an adequate safety margin. | spa |
