Abstract
Colombian coffee farming faces an aging producer population and a sharp decline in youth participation in the sector (Sistema de Información de los Hogares Cafeteros - SIHC, 2025). In response to this situation, the National Federation of Coffee Growers (FNC) has implemented projects to promote generational renewal, such as the one presented in this case study, whose main objective was to analyze the contribution of the project “A new generation of coffee entrepreneurs committed to coffee productivity and quality in the department of Santander” to generational renewal in coffee farming, evaluating its alignment with the success factors identified in national and international studies on agricultural generational renewal. The case was analyzed based on the definition of an analytical framework that integrated the key factors identified in a r view of academic literature and triangulation with the recommendations given by the International Coffee Organization (ICO) in its 2021 report (International Coffee Organization, 2021). The case was then evaluated against the seven success factors identified in generational renewal in agriculture. The findings of the evaluation of the case's alignment with the success factors in generational renewal in agriculture led to the conclusion that it contributes significantly to generational renewal by working on identification and motivation towards agriculture, technical education and specialized training, access to productive resources, cooperative, associative and community models, and effective intergenerational and family communication. However, the partial fulfillment of factors associated with economic viability and profitability, institutional support, and public policies highlights the need to consolidate institutional strategies that strengthen the process of generational renewal in coffee farming.
