Resumen
INTRODUCCIÓN. Aprender conceptos anatómicos complejos exige alta capacidad visoespacial.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION. Learning complex anatomical concepts demands high visuospatial ability. Although 3D Printing (3DP) and Virtual Reality (VR) offer new opportunities for teaching complex three-dimensional structures, their underlying socio-cognitive mechanisms require further exploration. This study aims to understand how knowledge is constructed when interacting with these representations. METHODS. A qualitative study was conducted using constructivist grounded theory. Ten residents participated in semi-structured interviews after interacting with three-dimensional models of congenital heart diseases. Data were analyzed iteratively through open coding, focused coding, and theoretical categorization.RESULTS. Participants described their interaction, allowing the identification of different dimensions related to the learning experience mediated by three-dimensional representations. Progressive changes in the understanding of complex anatomical relationships were described through spatial exploration, active manipulation of structures, and integration with previous knowledge. Likewise, affective and social factors that transversely influenced the experience were identified. Participants also described complementary differences between virtual reality and three-dimensional printing and, finally, implications for transfer to clinical practice.CONCLUSIONS. Three-dimensional representations favor a progressive process of reorganization of anatomical understanding through spatial exploration, sensorimotor interaction, the integration of previous knowledge and experiences, and the transversal influence of emotional and social factors. The findings show that these techniques are complementary in facilitating understanding and transfer to clinical contexts. This emerging theoretical model contributes to the understanding of the role of these technologies in medical education, by evidencing their influence on the cognitive, affective, and social processes involved in anatomical learning.
